🛡️ Enhancing the DDoS Mitigation System Using AI/ML
Duration: May 2025 – Present
Rethinking How We Respond to Attacks
There's a moment in every high-volume DDoS attack where the noise becomes the problem. Alerts stack up. Traffic analysis slows down. And decisions that need to happen in seconds start taking minutes.
That's the problem this project exists to solve.
Where It Started
I've spent enough time in network security to know that the tools we rely on are only as good as the logic behind them. Rule-based systems work, until they don't. They're built for attacks we've already seen, not the ones coming next.
That gap bothered me. So I started exploring what it would look like to close it.
What We're Building
The project focuses on using AI and machine learning to improve how DDoS attacks are detected and responded to, particularly when the volume is high and the window for action is narrow.
The goal isn't to replace human judgment. It's to make sure that when something serious is happening, the right people know about it faster, with less noise to wade through.
We're looking at how models can be trained to tell the difference between a legitimate traffic spike and an actual attack, and how that detection can trigger a response automatically, without waiting for someone to notice.
Why It Matters
In a sustained attack scenario, every minute of delayed detection has a cost, to availability, to operations, to the people depending on the service being protected.
Better classification means fewer false alarms. Faster response means less damage. And automation means the system can act even when the team is stretched.
That's not a small thing.
Where It Stands
The project is ongoing. We're in the research and prototyping phase, testing approaches, measuring what works, and building toward something that can be integrated into a real operational environment.
It's the kind of work that doesn't have a clean finish line. But the direction is clear, and the motivation hasn't changed: attacks are getting harder to stop with yesterday's tools. So we're building tomorrow's.
